The most expensive gold coin is a 1933 Gold Double Eagle that was sold at auction for 7,590,020 dollars! The coin was a 20 dollar gold coin that was originally part of a batch of 445,500 1933 Gold Double Eagle coins that were supposed to have been destroyed or melted down by the U.S. Government. The United States was ending the gold standard, when currency was backed by gold. Two surviving coins were given to the U.S. National Numismatic Collection by the U.S. Mint. Although these were thought to be the only surviving 1933 Gold Double eagles in existence, apparently all were not destroyed and it is believed that 20 more were being bought and sold amongst coin collectors. The United States Secret Service has been on the hunt for these missing coins for years and 10 were surrendered to them in 2004. One other coin was bought by the King of Egypt back in 1944. That particular 1933 Gold Double Eagle, later wound up in the possession of a British Coin dealer and as part of a settled court case, it was sold for the staggering sum of 7,590,020 dollars, that was split between the coin dealer and the U.S. Mint. **UPDATE** The most valuable Gold Coin NOW is the 2012 Australian 1 Tonne Gold Kangaroo.
